Want to write to Kate?

This is a continued saga about growing up that never ends.....

Kate set up and checked the time again. She hadn’t slept well all week. All her thoughts waking and sleeping were consumed with the move. This would be the third time in the last three years. Every summer brought a new place to try and fit in.

It was early but not too early to go ahead and get up. The house was empty of almost everything. Kate sat down in front of her mirror leaning against the wall. It was waiting for her bedding to be wrapped around it for the move. She wondered if she should get her hair cut. It was in here to have it long and straight. She hoped that her mom would say she was old enough to color it this year or at least get some highlights. She looked at her reflection and said, " Kate, you will be fine your not too tall or fat. You can get along with almost anybody and if you hate it you will probably move in about 10 months!" It wasn’t hating the place that bothered her as much as it was hoping that she wouldn’t love it so much that when she had to move it would just ruin her life.

Coffee Shop

....................................................................................................................................

It was a beautiful summer day, not too hot or humid for the first time in weeks. The weather was perfect for airing out the apartment over the store. Alisa went around opening up every window and spraying disinfectant spray as she went. She used a different scent for each room it seemed more special that way. Alisa could remember living in this apartment while their new house was being built. Both her parents were downstairs right now opening the ice-cream shop. It was sort of a coffee bar, soda fountain and fancy sandwich shop. Everyone in the area stopped in on a regular basis. When Mountainside Camp was packed with people they would open the back part of the shop and set up lots of extra tables outside. She looked around one more time and then closed the door and went down the stairs into the smell of coffee and cookies.

Write to Jenny!

 Going Places and Seeing Things

Jenny set on the bottom stair in front of her house and opened her new notebook. Then she made little squiggles in the corner. She looked sad and disappointed.

Mother came out and asked her if she needed any help with her homework. Mother could tell that Jenny was not happy.

Jenny explained that she had to write about all the places she went over summer vacation and all the interesting things she had seen.

Now this seemed like a big problem to Jenny because she couldn’t remember going to one interesting place or seeing anything good enough to write about!

Most of Jenny’s friends had gone somewhere over the summer. They went to visit family and they went to summer camp. Jenny told Mother that they had not gone anywhere and she didn’t know what to write.

Mother smiled and asked Jenny if she had a good summer vacation. She asked Jenny what she did while her friends were away and could not play.

Then Jenny smiled. She knew just what to write.

My Summer Vacation

Good Work!
Keep writing!

My summer vacation was the best summer vacation ever. I went to lots of places and I saw a lot of interesting things.

My mom and I went to the zoo and the library. We went shopping and to the beauty shop. I saw animals and fantasy lands. I saw designer gowns and I smelled permanent solution, YUCK!

My dad bought us a computer and I explored the internet . I found a lot of cool sites. I sent e-mail to my grandma and did an actual live video chat with my best friend, Kate and all her camp friends at Walla Walla Summertime Park.

THE END

Jenny was excited that she got an A+ on her paper. Mother was pleased too. She bought Jenny a surprise to celebrate! Jenny could hardly wait to open it. She pulled off the bow and stuck it in her hair. Mother kissed her and told she was a beautiful present. Then Jenny ripped open the package. It was a book but inside there were no words or pictures. Mother explained that Jenny would write the words and draw the pictures to make her very own real book.

Then Mother showed Jenny her treasure box. It smelled funny but in a good, sort of special way. It was like peaking at secrets that you could hold. Mother had a stack of books a lot like Jenny’s new book. They were all different. They were covered in fabric and some were bright and others were plain. It reminded Jenny of the quilt that she had gotten for Christmas. Mother said that the stories inside were just as different. Then she said that Jenny could read the first one she had written. Jenny held the book close to her and smiled. She could almost feel the surprises inside.

It had been a very good summer and Jenny went upstairs to put as much of it as she could remember in her very own surprise book. Maybe her little girl would want to read it someday.
