Burton's Garden of Schools, like so many great efforts, was created out of an unmet need.
Burton's Garden of Schools was founded in 1993 to assist families with homeschooling
their children. This was born out of the Burton family's personal homeschooling situation.
After years of assisting families, originally with Usenet and then later
the internet, Burton's Garden of Schools expanded its mission in 1996. Distance education was extremely limited at that time,
especially for the age of their oldest son. With no homeschooling groups for support,
yet still wanting the opportunity for
more interaction with other students and great teachers, they turned to the
internet, only to find alternatives limited at best. Thus Burton's Garden of Schools
was first made available as a private Christian school over the Internet
in the Fall of 1999.
With a vision for education that was unlike that of any available curriculum,
they took the opportunity of a very challenging situation and turned it into a
collaboration of God called educators and visionaries with unique talents that
still don't seem to fit any formal job title. These combined talents wove
together the first pilot version of Burton's Garden of Schools online.
From Fall 2001 through 2003, Burton's Garden of Schools went through a huge growth that left faculty and staff pressed to keep up. This spurred the development of a major redesign that was first available in Fall of 2006. With a new delivery system enabling more socialization between the students in a safe, virtual environment, separate homeschooling services, and new publications, Burton's Garden of Schools was ready for what lay ahead.
